Art, in all of its wonderful forms and applications, is the perfect way to teach children a great deal about themselves along with the colorful world that includes so many different things to see as well as create. All children need to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment and there's no better way to give that to them than by allowing them to express themselves through art.

Arts and Crafts for Kids

When it comes to arts and crafts for kids, the possibilities are just about endless as you're only limited by your own imagination. The mediums and supplies you use for the art projects will, of course, depend on the age and dexterity levels of the child, and having the right ones will not only help to keep them interested, but it'll also give them a great sense of accomplishment when they're all finished and able to admire their work.

Here are some basic art supplies you'll want to have on hand:

- Colored Pencils

Colored pencils are ideal for older children, for sketching and outlining, and they mix well together to create many interesting shades. When worn down they can be sharpened just like ordinary pencils and used again and again.

- Crayons and Markers

Very few children, if any, don't absolutely love to draw and color with crayons and markers whether it's on plain paper or in a coloring book. Markers are better for coloring pictures with smaller details or for outlining and drawing letters and signs while crayons work well for filling in bigger objects and for blending to create more colors.

- Finger Paints

The youngest of kids will enjoy creating artwork with finger paints. Use non-toxic paints, have plenty of newspaper on hand for covering the table and the floor beneath the tables and chairs, and have the kids wear mom or dad's old t-shirt to cover their clothes.

- Glue: White craft glue can be used for creating masterpieces out of both paper and wood, and it can also be used for adhering embellishments such as ribbons, lace, buttons, and whatever else you can find.

- Paper and Coloring Books

Besides plain white paper, cheap typing paper or copy paper works well and you'll also need some construction paper. The internet is chock full of free resources including coloring pages, patterns, designs, templates, crafts, and simple ideas for the kids to have fun with while developing their creativity.

- Scissors

For the older children, have regular scissors as well as the kind with scalloped or curved edges for making creative shapes and designs, and the younger kids will fare best with safety scissors.

Exposing Children to the Fine Arts

There are plenty of interesting places for kids to learn about the arts including museums and art galleries as well as craft shows and art exhibits. Craft programs at your local area schools and community centers that take place after school hours or during the summertime are also ideal ways of getting children interested in the fascinating world of art.

Explore the internet, rent or buy interactive videos and DVDs, and watch for TV shows that feature how-to projects for both young and old to discover an incredible number of ways to get the kids interested in art.
